The low winter sun
barely breaks the earth
I too barely rise
Gaunt days shadowed and gray
Claw across the calendar page
Spring begins her ritual
Cleric of storm and sun
Warden of time
Awaken, warm and weep
And wave her misty censers
Dead branches scraping the sky
Lightless morns without respite
She does not come for me
Standing on a cold reflection
A frozen lake I’ll fall right through
All I see is trapped and ashen
Endless clouds that ransom blue
What doesn’t change will fade
I’m losing time like tears in the rain

Is this it?
Ache, routine, longing, ennui
Sorrows slow and mundane
Sunrise to sunrise
We hope and we try
But there is joy
Cacophonous, inescapable
Unrelenting joy
Bright moments flash ecstatic
Caught in memory’s web
It is this
Two sides of a woven tapestry
Stretched ever thin
Pulling the darkness and the light
We are needle in hand
Trying to save and promise and weave
We are all hanging on by a thread
And it is coming apart
We are all so apart at the end
And it makes it so hard

Boughs pocked and frail
With riddle and rot
They fall and bloom the earth
The heat of the days
As they trail away
Into slumbering darkness and dearth
My hope for a world
Fallen out of hands
Too cracked and crumbled and weak
All of it
Like all of us
Fading away
Faded away

Find solace in the rising sea
At the bottom a sight of promised sleep
To sink and seek a hope of dream
Leagues of pressure on heavy eyes
Drifting down on swollen tides
Giving in to distant cries
There are gods down here
Ancient deep and divine
They all echo on the same things intertwined
“It’s safe in the dark when the furies abound
Bury yourself in the waves and their sound”
Just let me sleep
Through the year
I’ll be ready to wake
When the sky clears
